Gender of God

You'll find that I often use "He" when talking about God. I do this to honor how Jesus self-identified God - as his "Father." As a follower of Jesus, I have decided to identify God as Jesus identified him.

However, I don't believe that God is male or female. And the Holy Spirit, in particular, is gramatically female in both Hebrew and Aramaic. And neutral in Greek. It would be in keeping with scripture to refer to the Holy Spirit as "she."

In addition, certain names such as "Shakina" that refer to the God-head are feminine too. There are also many female images of God in the Bible. We should intentially embrace the female images of God so that we embrace the entire personality of God! In that vein, let's take a moment to remember these images:

God is our mother, a bear, who protects her cubs. Hosea 13:8

God brought from her womb, the ice that came forth on the earth. She gave birth to the frost of heaven. Job 38:29

God is the Rock that bore us and we can not forget she who gave us birth. Deut 32:18

God knew us from before our birth. She carried us in her womb. Isaiah 46:3

God gasps and pants, a woman in labor. Isaiah 42:13

God is a woman who comforts her child. Isaiah 66:13

God is even closer to us than a woman who nurses her child. Therefore we know that she will not forget us. Isaiah 49:15

God calls us under her wings as a hen gathers her chicks. Matthew 23:37
